Neurosurgery covers the surgical treatment of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, spine and peripheral nerves — from tumours and aneurysms to slipped discs and nerve injuries. It is one of the more technically demanding surgical specialties, simply because of what sits nearby: the tissue being operated on controls movement, speech, memory and sensation, often within millimetres of the surgical field.
What has changed most in the last two decades is not the underlying anatomy but the tools available to work with it safely. Operating microscopes, intraoperative neuronavigation (a kind of GPS for the brain and spine), and endoscopic techniques mean many procedures that once required wide open exposure can now be done through much smaller corridors, with less disruption to healthy tissue around the target.
That shift matters most to the patient on the other side of it: smaller incisions generally mean less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to ordinary life. Modern neurosurgery is still, at its core, about treating disease safely — but it increasingly does so with an eye on recovery from the first incision onward.
